TO BEGIN:
You’ll explore the foundations of strong woodblock design. First, you’ll develop a bold composition. Then, you’ll simplify your imagery, so it carves cleanly and prints clearly. You’ll also learn how to balance positive and negative space for maximum visual impact. With clear, step-by-step guidance from Ina, our experienced print artist and tutor, you’ll transfer your design onto an A5 wooden block and confidently handle specialist carving tools safely and effectively.
NEXT:
You’ll experiment with a variety of carving marks to create texture, depth, and expressive lines. As you carve, you’ll watch your image emerge in reverse. This is a fascinating and essential part of the relief printing process. Along the way, you’ll strengthen your control of line work, refine your tool technique, and prepare your surface for sharp, successful printing.
FINALLY:
You’ll ink your block and print by hand using a press. You’ll adjust pressure, refine paper placement, and manage ink coverage to achieve crisp, consistent impressions. As a result, you’ll produce a small edition of original prints that showcase your new skills.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll take home your carved A5 wooden block along with a series of handcrafted prints ready to frame or gift. Whether you’re new to printmaking or looking to expand your artistic practice, this woodblock printing workshop combines practical skill-building with creative freedom.
