Walking on Stilts – Surreal Elephant Sculpture Workshop (Ages 8+) 🐘✨
Step into a dreamlike world in our Walking on Stilts sculpture workshop. Inspired by the iconic long-legged elephants of Salvador Dalí. In this imaginative, hands-on papier-mâché experience, children will design and build their very own towering elephant balanced on elegant, stilt-like legs.
Designed especially for children aged 8+, this engaging workshop is guided step-by-step by our experienced and supportive tutor, Maree. Young artists will begin by learning essential sculpture techniques before exploring armature construction and papier-mâché layering to bring their surreal elephant to life.
In the first session, children will carefully construct their elephant from scratch, focusing on proportion, balance, and structure. With its tall, slender legs and strong yet graceful body, each sculpture will capture the magical, gravity-defying feeling that makes Dalí’s work so fascinating. Along the way, students will explore form, stability, and creative problem-solving while building a truly eye-catching piece.
Once the sculptures have dried, the second session shifts to painting and personal expression. Children will decorate their elephants using bold colours, expressive patterns, and imaginative details. They might choose earthy desert tones, shimmering metallic accents, or vibrant surreal hues, allowing each long-legged elephant to reflect their unique vision.
This workshop is perfect for children who love art, building, and thinking outside the box. It encourages patience, resilience, creativity, and confidence while introducing young artists to the exciting world of surrealism in an age-appropriate way.

WORKSHOP DETAILS:
Session One: Tuesday 6 October, 1 – 4pm – Build your magnificient sculpture
Session Two: Friday 9 October, 1 – 4pm – Paint & finish your long legged elephant
