For ages 10 to 15 years
This class is designed to teach children realistic drawing techniques. New students will be introduced to basic drawing techniques and theory, such as proportion, shading and perspective. Students will initially work from provided images from tutor’s collection and then as they advance they will move onto their own chosen projects.
Whatever your preference landscape, portraits, architecture or still life… let’s do this! First we’ll use photo references to shape realistic drawings. You will learn about outline, texture, shape correction, lighting and shading. Then the focus can change (only if you prefer) to learning some of the fundamental techniques in developing line based sketches. Sound good?
For ages 8 to 12 years & 13 to 18 years
It’s raw beats and rhythmic sounds made using sticks, buckets and of course some rock solid tutoring. Let’s make some noise! This course is an exciting way to learn percussion and rhythm while having a lot of fun learning in a group. We’ll provide the sticks and buckets, all you need to do is be eager to enjoy.
For ages 13 to 17 years
This class is about freedom, growth and loosening up! Working on a personal project and need help or do you just need a break from school art to explore some of your own ideas? Every artist is different so let’s build and develop your style and confidence through learning technical skills including layout, composition and application of colour. We’ll discuss ideas, problem solve and have general discussions about art and artists.
Simon draws on more than 30 years experience to help beginners with the basic construction of plain rings, stone-set rings, pendants and earrings and extends advanced students’ knowledge of design and construction. Beginner’s starter pack costs $55. More silver, gold and stones can be purchased later.
Talented local potter, Raewyn, teaches coiling & slab building; pinch pots; working with moulds & experimenting with different styles, textures and finishes. Create sculptural pieces or useful domestic ware. (Wheels are available). Fees cover material for an initial piece. More clay can be bought later in class.

Learn to recognise the merits and characteristics in the wines produced from grapes grown on Waiheke. The island is small but it has several different micro climates for the grapes to grow in and react to. You will be amazed at what you learn and taste.
First we’ll get started making the pasta and then while the pasta rests (not you) we’ll work together making the traditional tortellini filling. Andrea will share lots of tips and knowledge passed down through generations while he demonstrates a tasty simple sauce. Then we’ll stuff and cook and eat. There is Tiramisu and then there is TIRAMISU! You know which one you will make to take home, the most traditional and beautiful of all.

Then Andrea will make the ‘perfect’ egg pasta dough and demonstrate some of the more unusual shapes such as Gemelli, Casarecce, Cavatelli or if you’ve never had the Italian homemade macaroni then you are in for a treat. You ‘ll make and fill your own container of shaped fresh pasta to take home and cook.

In the second workshop we will discuss the benefits and properties of different natural additives that can be used in soap making, such as herbs, roots, and spices. Participants must know the basics of cold process soap making or have done the basic soap making course to register for either of the advanced workshops. Collect those odd socks – holes and all, the crazier the better and let the kids create something wonderful in our Trashy Hand Puppet workshop with Christine from Hands Alive Puppet theatre. Kids create their own puppet character or pet and then enjoy making their own character come alive using the techniques of puppetry ‘movement is the key’! Christine also encourages creating the ‘story’ of their newly made friends and shows how easy puppets are to make. Anyone can be a puppeteer! Suitable for ages 6 – 12 years
Create your own collection of beautiful printed designs on fabric using simple tools to make your own printing blocks and learn about pattern repeats in the process. A carefully curated colour pallet of textile inks will be provided for you to use during the workshop. You will make and take home a collection of stamps, printed samples on calico squares and a finished textile design on a linen tea towel. You will be introduced to a massive new technical skill set through a design process that uses grinders, drills, wet and dry sanding and polishing tools. You will also learn binding and lashing traditions used throughout Polynesia.
