Let your child’s imagination run wild as they discover the calming and creative aspects of working with clay. Raewyn will show them techniques and spark ideas allowing them to create their own interesting characters, ornaments and keepsakes. In the first session the children will design and make lots of fun items. In the second session they will be ready and waiting to be brought to life as they are painted and fired again to form durable and strong treasures. Suitable for ages 6 – 12 yrs.

This four hour workshop is perfect for beginners and ages 12 and up. We will go through two simple macrame techniques to wrap your chosen gemstone, and also look at braiding and fastening techniques to complete your very own necklace. The beautiful native Tui is our topic for today! You’re going to turn a ply wood cut-out into a beautiful piece of art. We will start by applying background paint also using familiar New Zealand scenes and we’ll use Maori kowhaiwhai stencils and gold paint to enhance it’s beauty. Suitable for ages 6 – 12 years.

They look and smell as good as food right? What is soap? How is it made? Let’s get started by using the cold process method. You will learn about different materials and ingredients used in all soap making, colouring and fragrances, troubleshooting and where to get your next supplies from. This workshop is hands-on and each participant will leave with several soaps they have made themselves during the day. All materials included in fee.
In this workshop we will discuss the benefits and properties of different natural additives that can be used in soap making, such as herbs, roots, and spices. Participants must know the basics of cold process soap making or have done the basic soap making course to register for the advanced workshops. Each participant takes home their own handmade natural soaps.
Learn how to make your own solid shampoo bars and conditioner bars! They’re great for your hair, great for the environment and great for your pocket. Each participant will be able to take 2 shampoo and 1 conditioner homemade to their own specific hair type. If used properly, each bar is equivalent to about 2-3 bottles of shampoo.
Learn how to make your own natural balms and deodorants. In this workshop with Jackie she will show you how to infuse oils with herbs and botanicals. You will use essential oils and other natural ingredients to make various types of balms, including a skin healing balm, nappy balm, solid deodorants, insect repellent and more. Everyone gets to make their own balm to take home with lot’s of recipes for making more.

Kid’s get started exploring the first steps to sewing and they’ll finish the session with a usable machined tote or book bag. We sew using our very safe hand crank machines, learning French seams so the bag ends up nice and tidy inside and out. This could be the beginning of a whole new world for your child.

Encourage your child to look and view the world around them and engage with each other through this interactive and hands on Photography workshop. Great photography is not created by a lens but with light and the eye, children discover how to improve and develop their own photography and capture what they find emotive in the world around them. Aotearoa enjoys some of the most beautiful fish and ocean life in the world and some of this beauty lies beyond the beach so let’s explore all that lives in our sea. Create your own sea world, fantasy or real but what to include; kina or crayfish, whales & octopus, ika moana, seaweed & rocks. We’ll use dye, inks, paints and texture creating a work of art. Suitable for ages 6 – 12 years.
This course is designed to suit all skill levels in a fun friendly environment. Beginners will be guided through making a simple ring band and then move on to designing and making a pendant or earrings incorporating basic skills and techniques and becoming familiar with jewellery hand tools and other workshop equipment. More advanced and returning students continue working on their own designs under Tania’s guidance and will be introduced to new techniques which they will be encouraged to use in their next project. Be as creative as you dare!
Starter packs cost $50 and further materials can be purchased as needed during the course.
Learn or develop your knowledge of the basics, from copper foil to lead lighting, while you work on your own stained glass project. Beginners are taught glass cutting techniques while making fantastic objects. Materials and equipment costs vary. Beginners buy a materials $15 pack for their first two small projects payable to the tutor on the first night.
Talented local potter, Raewyn, teaches coiling & slab building; pinch pots; working with moulds & experimenting with different styles, textures and finishes. Create sculptural pieces or useful domestic ware. (Wheels are available). Fees cover material for an initial piece. More clay can be bought later in class.
This introduction to the fascinating and beautiful art of glass fusing will teach you how to safely cut glass and then, using hot glass and diachroic glass, make jewellery of your own design. If there is time, we will also create a unique coaster for your cuppa or glass of tipple. All materials and tools are provided.
Imagine if snails carried around not just their house (shell) but a whole city on their backs. How would that look on paper? Children in this workshop will use lots of imagination and this combined with illustration skills will create some really captivating surreal paintings. Suitable for ages 6 – 12 years.

This fun introduction to art teaches the basics of drawing and painting using a host of different media. Amber & Siobhan are both friendly, talented, experienced and enthusiastic artists and tutors who encourage individual expression. Siobhan teaches the Monday session and Amber teaches the other Making Pictures classes.
For ages 10 to 15 years
This class is designed to teach children realistic drawing techniques. New students will be introduced to basic drawing techniques and theory, such as proportion, shading and perspective. Students will initially work from provided images from tutor’s collection and then as they advance they will move onto their own chosen projects.
For ages 13 to 17 years
This class is about freedom, growth and loosening up! Working on a personal project and need help or do you just need a break from school art to explore some of your own ideas? Every artist is different so let’s build and develop your style and confidence through learning technical skills including layout, composition and application of colour. We’ll discuss ideas, problem solve and have general discussions about art and artists.
Learn to paint or improve your practice! This fun, arts course is a variety of guided, practical sessions that help students develop their skills and paint-handling techniques. Work with acrylic or oil paints on a chosen project simple enough for an absolute beginner but challenging for those with some experience.
Whatever your preference landscape, portraits, architecture or still life… let’s do this! First we’ll use photo references to shape realistic drawings. You will learn about outline, texture, shape correction, lighting and shading. Then the focus can change (only if you prefer) to learning some of the fundamental techniques in developing line based sketches. Sound good?
This advanced course will enable students to build on the drawing practices previously gained. The focus will be on using still life objects and life models. You will improve your observation proficiency and it will provide opportunity to develop your own drawing style and language. To join this course you must have attended drawing with Alvin for at least 2 previous terms.
Let’s celebrate drawing natural or manmade objects that have been arranged in specific ways to create meaning and visual effect. We’ll consider proportion, shape, light and shadow and we might exaggerate too. The end results should lead the viewer towards what you the artist, thought was important. Learning to draw from still objects takes technique and sharpens your observational skills so you can move onto drawing creatively from imagination. All levels welcome
Want to explore realistic oil painting? There are many challenges in capturing a likeness and Alvin is passionate in sharing his knowledge on how to achieve this. Alvin speaks English, Mandarin and Cantonese so everybody welcome! We’ll get started using photo reference of human form, first learning the essentials in starting an oil portrait painting then moving on to the head structure and facial features, correct lighting, shading and colour choices. You can then move on to your own subjects and see great results.
It is recommended that you attend Alvin’s drawing or portrait oil painting class before joining this course. Alvin will give his instruction in both English and Chinese in the class.

Learn how to do illustration with award-winning artist and illustrator Ginette. Ginette has illustrated for her own and many other authors’ books. No drawing or painting experience required. We will guide you step by step to show you how fun illustration can be using Ink Pen, Watercolour pencil & watercolour. You can use this opportunity to create a special art gift or just come to enjoy the process.

Want to turn your travel memories and into a treasured painting? Award-winning artist and illustrator, Ginette, will teach you to use ink pens and watercolour washes to capture a scene quickly while you are travelling. Theory and practical exercises for quick sketching and perspectives will be covered. Please bring your own travel photos!

In this workshop we’ll use landscape subjects to learn several impressionist techniques. You will then learn how to incorporate these into your own watercolour work. The painting technique fundamental to impressionism is ‘broken colour’ which gives the beautiful sensation of light in a painting.

Stay well all year round, don’t let the germs catch up to you! This gently yoga course is suitable for older practitioners, those recovering from an injury or who have not practiced recently, beginners or anyone who just wants to practice in their own time without feeling judgement or comparison. We’ll take it nice and slow using strong breath as the foundation while improving our strength and flexibility. Everyone can do Yoga!

Learning Spanish makes travelling to or working in the USA, Latin America, Spain and the Philippines a rich and rewarding experience. Join Jenny Connors in this dance class with a difference. The focus for this class is on toning the body, strengthening the core, and deportment through the sensual Latin rhythms of Rumba, Salsa, cha cha and Samba. Of course a lot of fun will be had too!

This open group of painters welcomes newcomers. You may have attended classes previously and are now an accomplished artist and ready to enjoy the love of painting. These sessions are a specific time to paint and a social time to chat with like minded people. You do not need to be attending other Fine Art classes at UXBRIDGE to join this group.
