SUMMARY:Kintsugi
DESCRIPTION:Kintsugi is the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold. A metaphor for embracing your flaws and imperfections. \nLet’s pick up the pieces and mend them back together in this modern Kintsugi workshop. The art of Kintsugi not only makes this possible but also\, in turn\, celebrates the mend in the most beautiful and obvious way. \nKintsugi\, which loosely translates to ‘golden joinery\,’ is the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken objects whether wood\, metal\, or ceramic. Moreover\, it emphasizes beauty in restoration rather than hiding flaws. The techniques of Kintsugi treats the repair as part of the object’s history\, instead of hiding the repair as if it never happened. The ‘flaw’ reveals the history\, and the resulting piece is considered more beautiful. With guidance from tutor Han Nae Kim\, you’ll learn to beautifully piece your broken ceramic back together. \nUrushi is a traditional resin lacquer\, one of the oldest materials used in East Asia to repair damaged objects. First\, we’ll use traditional lacquer and varnish\, then apply gold or silver leaf or gold dust to repair your broken ceramic object. As a result\, the repair becomes a meaningful part of its history. Different techniques and repair materials are used depending on how many cracks or breaks your piece to repair may have. \n  \nTHINGS TO BRING TO KINTSUGI:\nBring your own damaged objects\, along with a container to safely transport curing items. All other materials will be provided.\nNOTE:  While workshop materials are all natural and food-safe\, traditional Urushi lacquer can cause allergic reactions. We will handle it carefully and provide guidance. \n  \nPlease note there is NO refund or a transfer if you cancel less than 7 days in advance or once the class/workshop has started. Our refund policy can be read in full here.

SUMMARY:Paint Carving
DESCRIPTION:This paint carving workshop is designed to be an introduction and to try something new and creative and to enjoy. You need no artistic ability to participate in this workshop but if you have some then you can use this to your advantage with the designs and carving. \nFirst\, we’ll get started with doing some carving practice\, using lines and curvy shapes on soft cutting mats to get you familiar on a draft item. Then the fun begins where each person chooses the design\, they like best and get started on your individual piece of art. We will have many different beginner and advanced paint carving designs to choose from. \nYou will then trace your chosen design onto a pre-prepared art board (20cm round) and the carving begins. Anna will be carving alongside you all as well so you can see and enjoy all the techniques\, she uses to create her beautiful larger pieces of art. \nFor beginners\, it is generally best to start simple when learning new skills. Often simple can create the best results and outcomes you will be happy with. \nIf you have carved materials before but are new to paint carving\, then you can probably choose a more advanced design. Anna will be able to help you choose based on your ability. \n  \nWHAT TO BRING?\nThere is nothing that you need to bring to this workshop.\nThe fee for the workshop includes all materials necessary to make a 20cm round paint carving\, so there’s no need to bring anything. \n  \nABOUT YOUR TUTOR:\nAnna says the paint carving process is so therapeutic. 30 layers of Resene Lumbersider paint is applied to a wooden canvas (or oar/paddle) in Anna’s case and then she begins to carve. It’s a true labour of love for sure. Anna designs each piece of art carefully\, using her background in Graphic Design to compose balanced arrangements. For her\, these are predominantly flowers and native birds\, however she has completed a few ocean themed works as well. \nAnna Tang is a practicing artist/tutor who exhibits and sells her artworks. To enquire about artworks for sale\, contact Anna. \n  \nWHAT PREVIOUS PARTICIPANTS SAY ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:\nAbbie R. (March 2023\nJust attended the paint carving afternoon at Uxbridge. Great fun. The carving was easier than I thought. Everyone produced something beautiful\, each different from each other. The tutor was great – showing examples\, giving us advice ad making sure we had everything we needed. \nNicola R. (March 2023)\nSuch a fantastic location for a creative workshop – I loved the Paint Carving workshop I attended over the weekend. Anna was a fantastic tutor\, the space is really inspiring and I can’t wait to be back for another workshop soon. \n  \nPlease note there is NO refund or a transfer if you cancel less than 7 days in advance or once the class/workshop has started.
