A Play By Apirana Taylor
A lively, modern retelling of the long ago exploits of Kupe, great Pacific explorer and navigator, created by leading Māori writer Apirana Taylor and performed by Tola Newbery.
Poet Apirana Taylor has penned a lyrical account of Kupe’s many exploits. Myriad narratives are woven to form an ambitious fifty-minute show.
Kupe’s exploits in Aotearoa are the subject of an epic poem originally commissioned by the New Zealand Festival.
Poet and storyteller Apirana’s work for solo actor is engaging, informative and suffused with beautiful symbolism. With creative license he darts from episode to episode on Kupe’s journey around Aotearoa. An heroic picture is drawn of the man many believe was the first visitor to these shores.
“ …may it have the long life it deserves so many thousands more can enjoy it.”
