Artist: Qiuwang Wang & Gavin Chai
Qiuwang Wang is a surrealist painter based in Tāmaki Makarau Auckland. His work engages his Chinese heritage with Māori culture that has inspired him since moving to Aotearoa in the 2000s. In 2022, he exhibited as part of I’ve Made Up My Mind at Studio One Toi Tū and later Kumeu Arts Centre’s Take a Look At Me Now exhibition and Into the Sea at Auckland International Gallery in the following year. Inspired by the intersection between imagination and reality, his artworks have become a melting pot of dreamlike fantasies.
Gavin Chai is a figurative painter and sculptor based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. His work is poetic in nature, reflecting on the human condition and our search for meaning in an ever-shifting world.
Bringing together realism with elements of the fantastic, Gavin draws inspiration from European and Chinese artistic traditions. He completed his Bachelor or Visual Arts at AUT in 2020, and is currently represented by Föenander galleries, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, and Page Galleries in Te Whanganui-a-tara Wellington.
