This is a unique Oil Portrait Painting opportunity to study portraiture under one of New Zealand’s most notable and respected figurative artists. The course approaches painting the portrait in oils through the introduction of a traditional wet-into-wet [Alla Prima] painting technique.
Participants will begin with painting exercises and quick portrait painting studies. Students will be taught palette organisation, colour perception, tone, light, proportion and anatomical structure.
As the Oil Portrait painting course progresses students will paint a long pose portrait using a limited palette. Individual feedback will focus on sensitivity to light and colour. Demonstrations will be provided. The course is suitable for all levels, though some prior basic painting experience is preferable.
Participants will have opportunity to paint from life models as the course progresses and when the tutor assesses the skill building.
Today Zarahn continues to question and critique his own methodology in painting. He is grateful for all the help he has received from friends, family, life models, students and patrons. They have happily given their time to be part of his development. Read more about his artist journey to where he is now https://www.zarahnsouthon.com/

WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT OIL PORTRAIT PAINTING:
Simon B. (August 2022)
My experience so far has been fantastic. Zarahn is an excellent instructor. As an artist of the highest calibre, his background is perfect to help me with the progression I was looking for. I’ve found it difficult to find classically trained artists who can mentor me in the style of work I want to do, and he fills that gap perfectly. His own work demonstrates his own mastery of technique superbly, and his quiet, knowledgeable tutoring works well for me with the right balance of demonstration and direction. I just wish I could spend more time in the studio with him.
