Oil Portrait Painting (Course)

Oil Portrait Painting Term 2 is now full. Keen to join Term 3? Put your name down on our waiting list and you will be contacted when Term 3 tickets are available! Click here.

This oil portrait painting course will be an introduction using a traditional wet-into-wet [Alla Prima] oil painting technique. This is a unique opportunity to learn portraiture under one of New Zealand’s most notable and respected figurative artists. Beginning with copies of old master paintings and moving on to photographs students will be taught drawing techniques, quick colour studies, palette organisation, colour perception, tone, light, proportion, and anatomical structure.

As the oil portrait painting course progresses students will paint a long portrait. Individual feedback will focus on sensitivity to light and colour. Oil painting demonstrations are provided. The course is suitable for all levels, though some prior basic painting experience is preferable.

There will be opportunity to paint from life models as the course progresses and when the tutor assesses the skill building.
