DESCRIPTION:In this immersive Pounamu Carving workshop\, you will explore the rich practices connected to Māori arts. First\, you’ll learn about the cultural significance behind Pounamu and its role within tikanga. Then\, you’ll move into hands-on making. \nThroughout this one-day workshop\, you will design and carve your own unique Pounamu Mārama (moon) taonga. Step by step\, you’ll learn essential carving techniques. You’ll work with diamond wheels\, drills\, wet and dry sanding\, and polishing tools. At every stage\, artist and tutor Maha Tomo will guide you closely. As a result\, you’ll confidently shape and refine your own Pounamu pendant. \nOnce your carving is complete\, you’ll take it further. You’ll learn traditional Polynesian braiding and lashing techniques to finish your pendant\, ready to wear. This is a contemporary\, tikanga-based workshop and is suitable for ages 12+. \nWHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR?\n\nThis workshop is ideal for beginners.
