SUMMARY:Drawing & Sketching
DESCRIPTION:The difference between drawing and sketching is in the detail. Sketching is artistic\, free\, and has very few constraints. It is the outline of a concept\, like taking a picture as reference. Drawing is refined and advanced\, something we do with extra attention. It is filling in the detail. \nSketching allows you to experiment\, it helps you see what lines you need to compose an authentic illustration of what you’re drawing. For beginners\, sketching is an important step as you want your illustrations to be as accurate as possible. Beginners can skip this step if they use photo reference as students will be in this course. Advanced artists often skip sketching and using photo referencing as they have the image stored in their mind. In this instance they would start sketching a drawing without circles or lines and move into drawing its contour and detail immediately. \nWhen you sketch\, you press your pencil softly on the paper\, so you can correct mistakes easily. \nWhen you draw\, it is thorough\, meticulous\, and precise. Drawing is the stage when you start to give your sketch a more pronounced form and you add the details like shading\, texture\, colour\, and value. When you draw\, it is committing\, every stroke is darker\, and applied with strength making errors difficult to correct. At the drawing stage\, you use your reference sketch lines to help keep good proportion and shape. \nDrawing feels more like a plan and sketching more like something spontaneous. \nIn this course we will be using photo reference instead of sketching with beginners as this way we can move straight into the drawing process and detail. \nWhether your preference is for landscape\, portraits\, architecture\, or still life Alvin will guide you and share his knowledge on how to achieve your desired results with your drawing subject. \nFirst\, we’ll use photo references to shape your realistic drawings. You will learn about outline\, texture\, shape correction\, lighting\, and shading. Then we will change the focus and learn some of the fundamental techniques in developing line-based sketches. \nWHAT TO BRING:\nClick here for the things to bring list for Drawing&Sketching with Alvin \nABOUT YOUR TUTOR:\nLet well respected artist/tutor Alvin Xiong share his knowledge and skills on realistic oil painting. Alvin is an experienced tutor and has taught for some time. He has a particular style which will step any beginner through the process and allow a continuing student to develop at their own pace and with his guidance. \nIMPORTANT NOTES: \n\nSome course prices can vary between terms depending on the number of sessions (e.g. Term 3 may have 9 sessions\, while Term 4 has 10). This is usually due to public holidays or long weekends.\nThere is NO refund or a transfer if you cancel less than 7 days in advance or once the class/workshop has started. Our refund policy can be read in full here

SUMMARY:Gentle Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Gentle Yoga: Move Slowly\, Breathe Deeply\, Feel Fully \nIn today’s fast-paced world\, gentle yoga offers a chance to slow down\, tune in\, and reconnect with your body. Unlike fast or intense styles\, gentle yoga focuses on ease\, breath\, and awareness rather than flexibility\, strength\, or performance. More importantly\, this practice encourages you to listen to your body\, explore gentle movements\, and restore physical and mental balance. \nThrough slow\, mindful motion\, you’ll deepen the connection between body and breath\, allowing space for stillness and healing. In addition\, turning inward helps calm the mind\, reduce stress\, and bring your awareness fully into the present moment. \nAbove all\, gentle yoga supports the body\, mind\, and spirit\, helping you return to a sense of wholeness and peace. \nWHO IS GENTLE YOGA FOR:\nGentle Yoga is ideal for older adults\, beginners\, or anyone returning to yoga after injury\, illness\, or a long break.\nIt is also perfect for those who want a slower-paced\, judgement-free yoga class focused on self-care and comfort.\nAll people can benefit from gentle yoga’s calming pace and its emphasis on mindful\, supportive movement. Whether you’re brand new to Yoga or simply need a softer approach\, this class offers a nurturing space to move and breathe. \nWHAT HAPPENS IN GENTLE YOGA:\nEach class blends breathwork\, slow flows\, and supported postures designed to increase flexibility and improve overall wellbeing.\nFirst\, you’ll practice pranayama – working with the breath to ground\, energise\, and prepare the body for mindful movement.\nNext\, slow-flow yoga and poses to gently stretch\, tone\, and strengthen the body without pushing it beyond your limits.\nThen\, core-focused movements help support spinal health\, posture\, and balance – while always remaining gentle and accessible.\nAfterward\, restorative yoga and savasana bring deep calm\, allowing space for stillness\, healing\, and deep nervous system reset. \nTogether\, these elements form a complete practice that restores your energy while gently building strength and flexibility over time. \nMEET YOUR TUTOR:\nJuliet Slogrove\, a registered NZ Yoga Alliance teacher with over 40 years of yoga teaching experience. Juliet believes yoga doesn’t change life’s circumstances\, but it does transform how we experience and respond to everyday challenges. In her words\, “Yoga helps us remember the joy of being\, even when life feels rushed\, heavy\, or overwhelming.” Occasionally\, Sue King may lead the class when Juliet is away; she comes highly recommended and receives great feedback. \n  \nPlease note: \n\nThere is NO refund or a transfer if you cancel less than 7 days in advance or once the class/workshop has started. Our refund policy can be read in full here.\nIf the tutor is unwell or unavailable to teach a single session\, often at short notice\, it is our preference to find a suitable relief teacher. If we are unable to do this then a session will be added at the end of the advertised course OR a credit voucher or refund for that session will be offered.\nCourse prices may vary slightly between terms depending on the number of sessions (e.g. Term 3 may have 9 sessions\, while Term 4 has 10). This is usually due to public holidays or long weekends.

SUMMARY:Kintsugi
DESCRIPTION:Kintsugi is the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold. A metaphor for embracing your flaws and imperfections. \nLet’s pick up the pieces and mend them back together in this modern Kintsugi workshop. The art of Kintsugi not only makes this possible but also\, in turn\, celebrates the mend in the most beautiful and obvious way. \nKintsugi\, which loosely translates to ‘golden joinery\,’ is the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken objects whether wood\, metal\, or ceramic. Moreover\, it emphasizes beauty in restoration rather than hiding flaws. The techniques of Kintsugi treats the repair as part of the object’s history\, instead of hiding the repair as if it never happened. The ‘flaw’ reveals the history\, and the resulting piece is considered more beautiful. With guidance from tutor Han Nae Kim\, you’ll learn to beautifully piece your broken ceramic back together. \nUrushi is a traditional resin lacquer\, one of the oldest materials used in East Asia to repair damaged objects. First\, we’ll use traditional lacquer and varnish\, then apply gold or silver leaf or gold dust to repair your broken ceramic object. As a result\, the repair becomes a meaningful part of its history. Different techniques and repair materials are used depending on how many cracks or breaks your piece to repair may have. \n  \nTHINGS TO BRING TO KINTSUGI:\nBring your own damaged objects\, along with a container to safely transport curing items. All other materials will be provided.\nNOTE:  While workshop materials are all natural and food-safe\, traditional Urushi lacquer can cause allergic reactions. We will handle it carefully and provide guidance. \n  \nPlease note there is NO refund or a transfer if you cancel less than 7 days in advance or once the class/workshop has started. Our refund policy can be read in full here.
