IMPRESSIONS

Impressions means to be marked, moved or stamped by something. It is also a play on the ‘artist’s impressions’ of an architectural draft, which are often commissioned to give a visual tracing of concepts and objects that cannot be seen otherwise, whether because they are too big, too small, in the past, in the future, fictional, or abstract. This series of commissioned artworks by four of Auckland’s hottest emerging talent is about how the new architecture of UXBRIDGE impresses itself on the artists, and in turn, how the artists respond to the new building and its surroundings.

BECOME A FRIEND OF MALCOLM SMITH GALLERY

Malcolm Smith envisaged a centre for his hometown that would be a beacon for the art and ideas of their day. Named after the late local architect, community stalwart and one of the greatest Friends of UXBRIDGE, our Gallery is committed to Smith’s vision by presenting the most compelling and confident works of contemporary art in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Malcolm Smith Gallery is part of a creative cluster of operations at UXBRIDGE Arts & Culture, which also includes a theatre for performances and cinema, and studios for courses in painting, pottery, jewellery, and more. As a public, non-commercial Gallery, we operate on a tight budget and embrace plural methods of funding. We’re proactive in generating our own funds but we need your help.

Joining Friends of Malcolm Smith Gallery is a wonderful way to help foster the practice and appreciation for contemporary art in East Auckland. While your support ensures that the Gallery continues to provide a global platform for local artists, you, on the other hand, benefit from a range of exclusive opportunities, such as discounted entries to events and limited edition publications. As well as playing a vital role in supporting our activities, the Friends extend the relationship between Malcolm Smith Gallery and the community. Give to your Gallery and gain a special connection with the development of contemporary art in East Auckland.

Friends’ benefits include:

  • Free Malcolm Smith Gallery exhibition catalogues
  • Free entry to the Estuary Art Awards competition
  • Free entry to Gallery events such as artist talks and offsite tours
  • Exclusive events just for Friends, including exhibition previews, social gatherings and outings with artists, as well as advance notification of all exhibition openings
  • More benefits added regularly! Ask the Curator for further opportunities
